In the world of kisses, excess always calls excess.
The costumed rock band has added a touch of flavor to their already assertive series of tunes by featuring the 60-piece Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on their latest album.
Like other musicians who have done the same thing before—from the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Deep Purple in 1970 to the Mr./Ms. Symphony Orchestra with Metallica in 1999.
The orchestral members who became Kiss's partners added a dimension and complexity to the traditional hard rock aesthetic.
But that wasn't always a good thing. Kiss is truly an American caveman, and their songs, which have a strong anthemic character, shine best in their rough, raw state.
The addition of an orchestra muddies Kiss's trademark sound.
ACrowds of aggressive strings occasionally crush Paul Stanley's fierce vocals, and even Gene Simmons' burly bass playing tends to swallow them up.
The orchestra members (all of whom played in Kiss makeup) come to life most in weighty numbers like "God of Thunder," for example.
Here, the orchestra, accompanied by terrifying sound effects and Simmons' chill-chilling voice, creates an eerie atmosphere.
Or the ballad "Beth," one of Kiss's top 10 most popular songs. Strings come into their own here.
For listeners who don't like the combination of black tie and black leather, Kiss was kind enough to include six tracks without orchestra.
What's more, these are live takes of old hits, acoustic versions that have never been performed before.
